Slone and Herr On Fire at Lime Rock Koni Challenge ST Race!
Jamie Slone, driving the #62 Roar Racing Mazda RX-8 in the Grand Am Koni Challenge ST race at Lime Rock was On Fire. Slone started the race in 20th out of a 45+ field and quickly moved towards the front! Slone said, " In qualifying I got only one clean lap and made the most of it, but knew I would have to be patient starting 10 rows back." When the time came for Slone to turn over the racing duties to Speed World Challenge start Chip Herr, Slone was in 5th place!
Herr came out of the pits at the end of a long yellow in 20th and within four laps had already passed seven cars! Herr in last practice session of the previous day ran the fastest time in the full ST class. So speed was not an issue for him and he too was on fire during the race. During the next yellow three cars in front had to pit to change drivers thrusting Herr into 10th spot! Seven of the remaining cars had pitted early in the first yellow so a splash of fuel would be needed at the end of the race for them but not for Chip Herr! Effectively Herr was already in 3rd place but never got a chance for the race to play out because in turn two Chip Herr had pulled off the track ON FIRE! The #62 had a pinhole leak in the rubber fuel line that was spewing at 60 psi and caused the car to catch fire. Herr escaped unhurt! A series of dramatic photos were taken by a Meyer Motorsports photographer and you can see the all the Hot Action of both Slone and Herr's race at Lime Rock by going to www.sloneracing.com
Slone and Herr will return to racing action with Roar Racing in the Koni Challenge ST class at Mid Ohio. In the meantime you can catch Jamie Slone, 2nd in the championship points, in round 2 of the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge at Mosport June 15th. Slone is currently in second place in the point's championship and hopes to find a first place podium spot. Herr's next race in the Speed World Challenge will be at Watkins Glen June 5-8 and he's looking to repeat his first place podium finish from Lime Rock recently. Stay Tuned..
