Grand Am Koni Challenge -- James Gue/JBS Motorsports finish 3rd in Lime Rock
Alparetta, Ga - This past Memorial Day weekend, May 24th-26th was the 2nd round of the Grand-Am Koni Challenge Series in Lime Rock Park, Connecticut. The whole JBS team looked to rebound from a disappointing race several months back in Daytona. During the 4 month break since Daytona the JBS team has been hard at work building a new FR500C Mustang. The new car was debuted this past weekend in Lime Rock. It was the standard 2 hour 30 minute format at the 1.53 mile Lime Rock road course, with James Gue sharing the driving with Bret Seafuse in the new #37 Mustang FR500C.
The first session of the weekend started off working through some new car problems, but team quickly resolved all the issues by the second practice session of the weekend. With the limited amount of track time the team focused on setting the car up for longer runs instead of setting it up for qualifying. With that being said Bret Seafuse turned in a great performance in qualifying and posted the 9th quickest time as well as being the fast Mustang.
In the race Seafuse wasted no time working his way to the front, and he eventually made his way to 4th place 45 minutes into the race, but a brief off course excursion while trying to avoid a lap car put him back to 12th place. Again he managed to to get back to the 8th position prior to turning the car over to Gue.
Gue returned to the track in 7th place, but on a restart he and several others were hit from behind in a turn one accident. The #37 car was very lucky to escape serious damage, and was able to rejoin in 12th place. For the remaining hour of the race Gue started to make his way back to the front and with 10 laps to go Gue found himself in 2nd place in an intense battle with Spencer Pumpelly. Unfortunately lap traffic played a role and that allowed Pumpelly to slip by. The whole time Gue and Pumpelly were battling for 2nd they narrowed the gap to the leader from 12 seconds down to 6 seconds, but there wasn't enough time catch them.
Gue commented: "This was great weekend for the whole JBS team. I'm so happy we finally got on the podium; it's been a long time coming. Bret did a fantastic job as well as the whole crew; the car ran flawlessly, and the pit stops were great. I really need to thank Jim Seafuse for making it all happen and having me on board as a part of the team. We'll look to carry this momentum onto Mosport in a few weeks time."
