Burrows and Hopwood take KONI points lead at Lime Rock Park
(Lakeville, CT) 26 May 07--Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood finished tenth in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge ST race at Lime Rock Park with the Turner Motorsport BMW 330i. Despite moving into the KONI championship points lead with the result, the race conclusion was a disappointment for the duo after qualifying on the pole position and leading fifty-one of the 132 laps.
Burrows led the race from pole, and controlled the opening laps of the race. A fellow BMW took the lead after Burrows got held up in traffic, but he quickly moved back to the point to grow his lead before turning the car over to Hopwood, who rejoined the fray in eleventh.
"Even though I have led a lot of laps here before, to move up to a series that is as competitive as KONI is, with a field as strong as this one, it was a great experience to be running up front like we did today," said Burrows. "We didn't get all the points we wanted out of the weekend, but it's another top ten for us and I'm happy to leave here with the points we did get and start getting ready for Mosport."
After taking over from Burrows, Hopwood quickly moved up to the point and grew his lead to over twenty seconds over the rest of the field. But a late-race yellow flag eliminated the lead as Hopwood was forced to pit for a penalty earned during the previous pit stop. After rejoining in seventh, Hopwood was well on his way back into the top five before contact from a competitor spun him off course in Big Bend, costing him several positions.
"I am really frustrated because we had a great car today and I just wasn't patient enough," said Hopwood. "But I wanted to win here and we were just running out of time."
The KONI Challenge will race again at Mosport on the weekend of June 15-17.
