Turner And Salama Stay In The Hunt For The Championship
LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY, Monterey, CA - 05/09/2006 - Will Turner and Don Salama scored their second top-five finish of the year in Saturday's 200-mile Grand Am Cup Street Tuner race at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California. Turner and Salama, in the #95 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW 330i, started from the front row and were race leaders in the beginning of the race. Their finish gives them solid footing in the Championship heading into the next round at Phoenix Raceway this coming weekend.
The Bill Auberlen/Chris Gleason BMW M3, sponsored by H&R Springs, StopTech Brakes, and Gleason Insurance made un-avoidable contact with a spinning car and was forced to retire. Anders Hainer and Boris Said in the #97 H&R Springs/Under Armour BMW M3 were hit from behind and ended up stuck in the gravel trap when another car lost its brakes.
Don Salama qualified the H&R Springs BMW 330i on the front row for the second time in as many races. He jumped out to an early lead on the Street Tuner (ST) class field. When the time came for their pit stop the Turner Motorsport crew performed a flawless service on the car and sent Will Turner out in third place. Then, on a restart with 13 laps to go, a melee resulted in Turn 1. Turner was shuffled two spots back to fifth. He remained there while a car in the Grand Sport class challenged the ST class leaders and mixed up the running order. He had no opportunity to regain his positions back.
Will Turner, Team Owner and pilot, #95 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW 330i:
"We had a good race today. The car was excellent and the crew did a terrific job during our stop for fuel and tires and the driver change. We're really looking forward to Phoenix though because the Grand Sport and the Street Tuner classes will be split up into their own races - we won't have to race people we don't have to."
Turner Motorsport has a great team assisted by some of the best names in the tuning and performance business - H&R Springs, StopTech Brakes, B&M Racing, Borla Exhaust, Pagid Brake Pads, Motul Lubricants, and Piloti Driving Shoes. These excellent products have helped Turner Motorsport to numerous victories and podium finishes in Grand Am Cup, World Challenge, SCCA, and BMW Club Racing.
The SPEED Channel will begin broadcasts of this race from Laguna Seca on Saturday, May 13 at 1:00pm ET. It is scheduled for repeat on May 15 at 12:00pm ET.
The next round in the Grand Am Cup championship is this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona. The action gets underway on Thursday with both races scheduled for Saturday.
