Chris Wehrheim Scores Top 10 Finish at Grand-Am Cup Debut
May 3, 2005 -- Chris Wehrheim made his Grand-Am Cup debut this past weekend at the U.S. Sportscar Invitational at Laguna Seca Raceway. Chris piloted the #36 Compass360 Racing BMW Z3 Coupe.
The weekend started off on Friday with a one hour practice session. Chris took his time to work on heal and toeing and getting use to a much heavier car. On Saturday, there was one practice session, qualifying, and the race. Practice went well with Chris improving his times every lap. Qualifying was up next and Billy Johnson qualified the car in 12th place which was an improvement over practice. Up next was the 2 ½ hour U.S. Sportscar Invitational, and by mid race, the team was in 6th position mounting a charge towards the top five. Around the 1 hour and 10 minute mark, a caution came out and almost all of the teams came in to make their driver changes. Chris's team stayed out one extra lap and paid the consequences of pitting 1 lap later than the leaders which put them way behind on the restart. Chris was able to run fast, consistent lap times and move back into the top ten with a ninth place finish.
"I had a lot of fun this weekend," remarked Wehrheim following the event. "Though the result is not what we hoped for, we showed we can run at the front. I hope to run at Watkins Glen and with a few improvements on the car I am sure we can achieve a top five. I have to thank Karl, Ian, and the whole Compass360 crew for making my first sportscar race a very enjoyable one."
Next up on Chris's schedule is the 2nd round of the Skip Barber Midwestern Championship at Watkins Glen where he plans to extend his points lead. Chris is also looking for marketing partners to compete in more Grand-Am Cup races. Interested parties can contact Chris at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The U.S. Sportscar Invitational will air on SPEED May 14th at 3 P.M. EST.
