BSI Racing: Top-10 finish at the Iowa Speedway
BSI Racing and Team Garcia continue their top-10 finishing streak after an 8th place finish by Todd Buras and Carlos Garcia in the No. 56 Joe Gibbs Racing Oil/ MOMO Mazda MX-5 at the Iowa Speedway this past weekend. The No. 58 JustRacing.com Mazda MX-5 driven by Justin Hall and Magnus Karlsson also had great race results with a 14th place finish. Both race finishes help boost BSI team in point standings. The race finish has placed BSI Racing 9th in ST team points.
For the first road course race ever held at the Iowa Speedway, the KONI Challenge Series put on an exciting show. The two and a half hour race consisted mostly of clean and competitive driving. Only a handful of yellow caution flags fell throughout the race. Both Karlsson and Garcia, in the No. 56 and No. 58 MX-5 race cars stayed out for ninety laps (half the race). They had to pit for a driver change under green flag racing due to the lack of caution laps. "The car started out with a push but after 10 minutes the car was great," said Garcia after he climbed out of the No. 56 car. Karlsson was also smiling after his stint at Iowa. "I really needed a break but I pushed myself in the car. My whole left side is sore from having to constantly be turning. Even so, I still turned my fastest lap all week in the car during the race."
After the driver change, Hall and Buras both took to the Iowa track and got into a steady pace. The track stayed green and it seemed that the race would end without any major accidents. Then with the last ten minutes left in the race, Buras in the No. 56 passed ST competitor No. 68 for position. As Buras moved up in position an accident occurred ahead and behind him but the MX-5 was able to slip out from the cars and hold onto 8th place. "I pulled off a clean pass during the last few minutes of the race," said Buras. "Then I was pancaked between two wrecks. There was a crash ahead of me and right behind me. But I managed to pop out in front of everyone. What a race!"
After the Iowa race results BSI Racing is 9th and 23rd in team points in the ST division. The team and drivers were extremely satisfied with their first race experience at Iowa and look forward to another opportunity to race at the Speedway. The next KONI Challenge race will be at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on May 19th.
