"Star Mazda Series Front Runners Look To Impress This Weekend."
TORONTO, ON. - Markham, Ontario resident Daniel Di Leo and teammate Michael McDowell of Charlotte, NC will compete in the Miami 250 Grand-Am Cup event this weekend at Miami Homestead Speedway in Southern Florida. The duo will co-pilot the #83 Porsche 996, Commercial Defeasance, BGB Motorsports entry around the Homestead circuit with the hopes to challenge for the victory.
Di Leo and McDowell currently sit 1-2 respectively in the Star Mazda Series presented by Goodyear as they provide Rob Finlay's Finlay Motorsports team with a potent combination. Di Leo, who was planning on being in the Sunshine State as a spectator, was asked to get behind the wheel of the #83 Porsche as team owner Rob Finlay was forced to the sidelines to fulfill prior commitments.
"This is going to be a very challenging weekend for me" explained Di Leo in a recent phone interview. "It will be my first time in a sports car and with the shortened weekend due to the current weather situation I will only have two sessions to get used to the closed wheel cars. I am quite certain that I will do well and am very confident that the team will give both McDowell and I a great car."
The two rising stars, who are great friends off the track but furious competitors when the green flag drops, will now have the role of joining forces and use each other to give Finlay Motorsports its first podium finish.
Team owner Rob Finlay plans on campaigning a Daytona Prototype ride in 2005 and is looking to expand his current driver line-up. Di Leo could be the one for the job. "I love racing and thrive on its competitive nature. I will get in anything and drive it, and with that I am thankful for the opportunity that both Rob and Mike have given me this weekend."
With the shortened event schedule both Di Leo and McDowell will hit the track Saturday morning for two 45-minute sessions as they look to get up to speed in their #83 Porsche. The green flag will fly on the three-hour event at 2:45pm Saturday afternoon with a tape delay being shown at 10:00pm Saturday evening.
