Automatic Racing qualifies 7th and 8th for Miami 250.
HOMESTEAD, Fla.- Automatic Racing qualified seventh and eighth in the Grand Sports II class for the second round in the Grand-Am Cup series championship, the Miami 250.
The team anticipates a challenging race, but is looking forward to continuing their success after earning second place in the first race of the season at Daytona International Raceway.
Eric Van Cleef qualified the No. 90 BMW M3 with a time of 1:33.153 (92.751 mph) around Homestead-Miami Speedway's infield road course. This weekend's Miami 250 is the first time the team's new E46 M3 has been raced.
Van Cleef will be joined in the race by Terry Earwood. Both drivers are competing under the Automatic Racing banner for the first time this weekend.
Jep Thornton handled the qualifying duties for the No. 09 BMW M3, setting a fast lap time of 1:33.388 (92.567 mph). David Russell will co-drive with Thornton for the race.
The Grand Sports II teams that qualified fifth through tenth in class were all within one second of each other on the qualifying time sheets. Automatic Racing will face a lot of competition as they aim for the front of the field, but they are confident that their proven combination of cars, drivers and crew will give them an advantage.
"Our car will be great, especially on the long runs," commented Russell. "We'd love to see the race go green the entire time. It's going to be a good race."
The Miami 250 will get the green flag at 12:30 pm EDT on Sunday, April 13. All four classes of the Grand-Am Cup Series will be competing.
Automatic Racing is sponsored by Automatic Commercial Aircraft, BBS, LandAir and Engine Music Studios.
