2003 Champions Quickest on First Day of Pre-Season Testing
Istook/Aines Audi Tops Grand-Am Cup Field
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 3, 2004) -- Bell Motorsports, winner of last year's North American Road Racing Championship, continued to prove its dominance on the racetrack by posting the fastest lap time during the opening day of Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series pre-season testing at Daytona International Speedway. The Bell Motorsports No. 54 Chevrolet Doran JE-4 clocked a 1:49.209 lap at 117.356 mph around the Speedway's 3.56-mile road course during the morning session.
Daytona Prototype driver champion Terry Borcheller is joined this weekend by Forest Barber, Andy Pilgrim and Milka Duno in the No. 54 Chevy of Bell Motorsports, based in Miami, Fla.
The No. 58 Red Bull Porsche FABCAR of Brumos Racing, based in Jacksonville, Fla., turned the second-fastest time of the day with its 1:49.369 lap at 117.181 mph in the late afternoon session. The Red Bull Daytona Prototype is piloted by David Donohue and Darren Law and Porsche factory drivers Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr.
Orbit Racing, based in Jupiter, Fla., was quickest in the GT class on Friday. The No. 44 Porsche GT3 RS clocked a 1:55.599 lap at 110.866 mph. AASCO Motorsports, of Anaheim, Calif., had the fastest time in the Super Grand Sport class, as its No. 16 Porsche GT3 Cup turned a 1:57.217 lap at 109.336 mph.
The Grand-Am Cup Series also held two testing sessions on Friday, with the Istook/Aines Motorsports No. 04 Audi S4 topping the field with its 2:06.598 lap at 101.234 mph. Don Istook, Randy Pobst and Blake Rosser are sharing driving duties in the Audi during testing.
The Grand-Am Cup Series Sport Touring division was led by the new No. 70 Mazda RX-8 of SpeedSource. The Mazda of Sylvain Tremblay and David Haskell turned a 2:15.032 lap at 94.911 mph
Race fans can watch Sunday and Monday's testing at Daytona International Speedway from the Oldfield Tower grandstands. Admission is free of charge and accessible through the lobby of DAYTONA USA.
