Maxwell, Empringham Triumph In Grand-Am Cup
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Feb. 1, 2002) * Scott Maxwell and David Empringham, wheeling the No. 76 Doncaster Racing Porsche GT3 Cup, captured the overall win in the Grand-Am Cup two-hour enduro on Friday at Daytona International Speedway.
Maxwell, who started the race, was nose-to-tail with the No. 01 GW Motorsports Porsche for the first hour of the race before eventually pulling away. Empringham relieved Maxwell during the pit stop and took the checkered flag in the Grand Sport I class entry.
"Our car was really, really strong in the infield," Maxwell said. "So I was just sort of shadowing his moves and hoping (No. 01) would eventually use up some rubber, which I think he did and I was able to get by him. But having said that he just sort of kept in sight of me. I pushed really hard for the whole hour without abusing the tires. It wasn't a cruise by any means. My hour was trouble free."
Said Empringham: "We had a fairly comfortable lead (when I took over). I was fortunate that Scott was able to give me a car that was still really strong. More or less I just saved the tires."
Devon Powell and Doug Goad took runner-up honors in the No. 11 Powell Motorsports Corvette despite an early setback when Powell got tapped from behind on the opening lap of the race.
"We had a little push from behind," Powell said on the start. "We had some body work cutting into one of the rear tires and Doug was mad at me but I didn't want to risk the car. It was the right rear and it takes a serious load on the banking so I didn't want to take a risk of it coming down. We came in and the guys did a good job putting a new tire on rallying back."
Other class winners in the Grand-Am Cup included the No. 30 Mustang Cobra R and drivers John Shreiner and Jeff Lapcevich (Grand Sport II class), No. 2 Team Lexus IS300 and drivers Tim Gaffney and J.F. Dumoulin (Sport Touring I), the No. 27 Bill Fenton Motorsports Acura Intergra and drivers William Fenton and Bob Beede (Sport Touring II)
