Conserving fuel in the closing laps, Terry Borcheller and Craig Stanton drove their TheRaceSite.com Porsche 996 to victory Friday in the Grand-Am Cup Daytona 250 at Daytona International Speedway.

“I knew that the Porsches were really good on fuel . . . and I was able to short shift when I could and draft when I could to conserve fuel,” Borcheller said.

The pole sitting Doncaster Racing Porsche 996 led until gearbox problems on lap 50 of the 70-lap race dropped them from contention. The lead changed hands several times over the next five laps, allowing Borcheller to assume the lead with 11 laps to go.

The No. 38 BGB Motorsports Porsche 996 of Guy Cosmo and Mark Plummer finished second, followed by Mike Cronin Jr. and Stu Hayner in the No. 33 Unitech Racing Nissan 350Z.

“I’m really happy,” said Cosmo. “Two wins in a row last year was really tough to beat. I wanted to come in here and show the guys that we could pull off three, but finishing second to a guy like Terry Borcheller isn’t too bad.”

John Schmitt and Mike Liebl won the Sport Touring class in the No. 29 Bill Fenton Motorsports Acura RSX-S.

“It was just a great day,” said Liebl. “Johny really did all the
hard work. All I had to do was get in there and drive.

The No. 12 TC Kline Racing BMW Z4 of Anita Sangi and Neal Sapp finished second, one lap behind Liebl and Schmitt.
