Accidents Bite Into The Turner/Salama Lead

BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK, Birmingham, AL - 10/11/2004 - The two-car Turner Motorsport BMW team suffered through an up-and-down, caution-filled race this past Saturday at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama. Will Turner and Don Salama, car #95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i, finished in the sixth position in the ST class after contact with another car forced them to make multiple pit stops. Car #97, meanwhile, driven by Tim Pappas was involved in a separate incident and was forced to retire with heavy damage to the car.

Will Turner and Don Salama made more than the usual number of pit stops to diagnose and repair damage after another competitor came into contact with Turner midway through the 3-hour race. One of the front tie rods suffered damage and, while the crew was able to correct the alignment, multiple pit stops were needed so as not to lose valuable laps while stuck on pit lane. The race's large amount of caution periods aided the team in their repair of the car. Still, the TMS-powered BMWs were running at the front of the pack with Salama leading the race at one point.

Turner and Salama still hold the lead in the overall Championship standings as the final round of the Grand Am Cup series fast-approaches. They lead the Championship by 8 points.

Tim Pappas' race ended before the first hour was completed after a GS-class Porsche attempted to pass under braking but failed to complete his stop. The resulting crash left Pappas and his car hard up against the concrete barriers in turn 1. Pappas was shaken but not physically injured in the crash.

This round from Barber Motorsports Park will be broadcast on The SPEED Channel on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at 3:00pm (ET).

The next, and last, round of the 2004 Grand Am Cup season will be at California Speedway in Fontana, CA on Saturday, October 30, 2004.
