After coming from the highest Spirit of Daytona GTO finish all year (11th), GTO driver, Marc-Antoine Camirand is ready for a top-10 finish. Spirit of Daytona will be putting forth a two-car race effort in the Grand Am Cup 200 at the Barber Motorsports Park on Saturday July 29. Camirand will be joined with Craig Conway to power the No. 9 Daytona Mitsubishi/ Diamond Suzuki/ Crane Cams/ Corsa Exhaust GTO. Doug Goad will appear in his second GTO race of the season with teammate Mike Weinberg in the No. 10 Rockland Standard Gears/ Crane Cams/ Corsa Exhaust GTO.
The No. 9 GTO has already tested at Barber this July. The car was running fast laps even with the stress of the heat and humidity in the afternoon hours. Camirand was able to drive the GTO during the mid-July test day. "The car was hot and the track proved challenging but we were able to make some really good adjustments. Our car will be competitive on Saturday. What we learned from the test will also help get the No. 10 car up to speed for Doug and Mike."
Camirand's co-driver, Craig Conway will be experiencing the Barber Motorsports Park for the first time this July. After Camirand's test in the GTO, the two drivers discussed the car's handling on track and the overall performance. Conway said, " I talked to Marc-Antoine a lot about how the car tested. It shouldn't be too difficult for me to get used to the track. Marc said it was a cross between Mont-Tremblant and Mid-Ohio, both tracks that I have raced on before," said Conway. Conway will be putting in a lot of track time during the Promoter's Test on Thursday to catch up to Camirand's experience. "I am going get as much of the test I can on Thursday. Marc has done a lot of laps already and I will be able to get some seat time this week."
Goad and Weinberg have already raced on the Barber track. Last year Weinberg raced in the GT Class GTO and Goad raced in the Daytona Prototype. This will be Goad's first time powering the GTO at the Barber track. " It is good for Doug to be in the GTO this race," said teammate Conway. "Goad's observations on the car will help the team with the overall setup. He has turned thousands of race laps in cars similar to the GTO and he really is an expert on this kind of car," said Conway.
Spirit of Daytona will be campaigning a fleet of three GTOs in the 2006 Grand-Am Cup Series. The team is offering a rental and ownership program for interested competitors. Sprit of Daytona associate sponsors include: Corsa Performance Exhausts, Crane Cams, and GCC Servicing Systems.
