Drifter For A Day
Birmingham, Ala. (July 18, 2009) - Randy and his Compass360 Racing #74 Honda Civic Si team survived a loose setup to finish seventh Saturday at Barber Motorsports Park for Round 8 of the 2009 Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge. Co-driver Christian Miller qualified and started the Honda in a promising third and remained close to the top for his stint of the race. Randy got in midway and had to fight a progressively loose car for the remainder of the race but was able to hold on to a respectable finish.
"That was a tough race. We missed the setup, making the car loose, and it became a survival race. We looked really competitive in practice and on the shorter runs. Barber is a unique race track. The cars slow down a lot once you've done a few laps during a long run. With our front-wheel-drive Hondas, we were concerned with the possibility of understeer so we went with an aggressive setup. Unfortunately we went too far and it hurt us in the race. The car was fun to drive though. I was like a drifter, but that's not the fastest way. You want a little bit of drift but not that much. We survived and got a decent finish. Christian ran a great race and still has the points lead."
"As usual, our Compass360 Honda was reliable, well prepared and ran great. We took a shot at the setup and just missed it. I will not make the next KONI race at Trois-Rivieres, Quebec due to a conflict with my World Challenge K-PAX/3R Racing Volvo. Our friend Benoit Theetge will be filling in for me and Compass360 expects to do well there. It has been a lean year for me with the rules restrictions on both cars. The next World Challenge race at Autobahn should be a good one for us with the track's tight corners and short straights. I would again like to thank my personal sponsors Team Janica Racing, WeatherTech, Prairie Hills Motorsport Club, ChaseCam, and saferacer.com for their continued support."
Christian has the championship lead by 18 points over the Skavnes/Aquilante Suburu (231-213). Randy is in third place with 205 points. The APR Volkswagen won again and has a major power advantage so it could get close.
The KONI race at Barber Motorsports Park will be televised on July 25 at 12:00 PM EST on SPEED. Randy's next SPEED World Challenge GT race will be at Autobahn Country Club, July 26. The next KONI Challenge race for Randy will be September 18-20 at Miller Motorsports Park.
