Hopwood and Burrows retake KONI points lead at Barber
Duo stay cool in Alabama heat to take second in all-green race in first visit to Barber Park
(Leeds, AL) 21 July 07--Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood finished second in Saturday's Porsche 250 Grand-Am KONI Challenge race at Barber Motorsports Park. The result moved the two back to the ST Class lead in the KONI Championship standings with the Turner Motorsport BMW 330i. The runner-up result marks the fourth podium appearance for Hopwood and Burrows in what has developed into a very impressive rookie KONI effort from the two.
Burrows converted his front-row qualifying spot into second position after a clean start as the race-winning No. 01 led the field with ease in the early stages of the race. The Connecticut resident stayed in touch with the leader from second place as a lead pack of four entries grew a significant gap to the rest of the field through the first half of the race.
"I was just focused on getting a clean start and from there, I just settled into a comfortable pace," said Burrows. "Even though I was trying to save the tires and the brakes, things got pretty slick at the rear of the car by the end of my stint. But I held on and just worked on being consistent so I could turn it over to Trevor, who did a great job to bring it home like he did."
Burrows then turned the car over to Hopwood, who returned to the pack in fifth, but was soon back into second position just a few laps into his run. He held his ground to take yet another podium finish and move the blue and yellow Turner machine back into the points lead.
"The Turner guys gave us a smoking fast pit stop, and that was a good enough gap for me to make sure that Pierre (Kleinubing) couldn't get us," said Hopwood. "I saw him coming at the end, but we had enough in our pocket to hold onto the position. It is a little frustrating to be second again, but it's good for the points race and hopefully we'll get to the top of the podium here soon enough."
The result bodes well for the next two rounds of KONI racing at the Grand Prix de Trois Rivieres and Miller Motorsports Park, which like Barber Park was this weekend, will be new tracks to both Burrows and Hopwood.
