Skip Barber trained racers and their teams claimed four of the five possible class victories at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, one of the most prestigious and grueling endurance contests in the world. The SRP, SRP II, GT and AGT classes all fell to teams running with Skip Barber grads. The top-15 team finishers were dotted with nine Barber grads among three classes.
Mike Fitzgerald and company scored the win in GT class, ending the contest second overall only eight laps down. Fitzgerald, winner of the Porsche Cup this year, was piloting the White Lightning Racing Porsche 911 GT3R. Kyle Petty and his mates took the Orbit Racing Porsche 911 GT3RS to second place in the same class and seventh overall. Skip Barber instructor Hugh Plumb and his Porsche 911 GT3R team rounded out the overall top-10 in tenth and a fifth place result in GT. Father-son combo Tom and Spencer Pumpelly rounded out the top-15 overall with their seventh place in the GT class, racing the Spencer Pumpelly Racing Porsche 911 CT3R.
Kelly Collins and Andy Pilgrim [who teamed with NASCAR veteran Dale Earnhardt and his son Dale Jr.] in the Corvette Racing C5-R celebrated second place honors in GTS class and fourth place overall for the weekend. New Yorker Howard Katz and team took the SRP category, besting the heavily favored Dyson Racing who fell to mechanical problems. The Katz effort was running a Downing Atlanta Inc. Kudzu/Mazda.
Barber Dodge Pro Series racer Andy Lally and his team won the SRP II classification and placed 13th overall in the Archangel Motorsport Services Lola B2K-40 Nissan. Lally turned in double-duty, racing with another team in the GTS class. His second team effort placed a respectable 24th overall. Finally, Dick Greer and company won the AGT class, finishing 28th overall, in the Hamilton Safe Motorsports Chevrolet.
