USFilter Planet Earth Motorsports Corvette Hit Out Of Contention At The First Turn of The Two Hour Motorola Cup Event At Mid-Ohio
The weather at Road America cooperated for a brief two hour interval on Saturday afternoon, which was long enough for the Motorola Cup to stage a shortened two hour race for the sixth race of a ten race season.
The rains came in early in the morning on Saturday July 8th, and did not leave until late that afternoon. The race was delayed from its 2:00 starting time to a 4:15 starting in order for the track to be dried of standing water. Even still, the track had standing water at various places around the track.
Rain clouds still loomed overhead as the race was beginning, but the USFilter Planet Earth Motorsports team choose dry tires (as opposed to grooved rain tires) for their three car effort which includes the GOJO Chevrolet Corvette C5, and two Comptech Sport Acura Integra GS-Rs. The decision to remain on dry tire proved to be the right one as the Wisconsin weather was dry for the remainder of the day.
At the first turn, the #43 GOJO Corvette was punted off into the grass by an overzealous move by a fellow Corvette competitor. After a brief ride through the grass, the Corvette, being driven by Joe Nonnamaker returned to the track in the middle of the slower Grand Sports Class. While making its way back up through the pack, an overzealous Grand Sports car hit the Corvette at turn number eight. This hit was severe enough to bend the tie rod, and forced Nonnamaker to pit for repairs. The team's hope for overall victory were already ended though as the wreck caused the team to lose multiple laps in the pits. By the end of the race, the Corvette had worked its way up to tenth in class.
Joe Nonnamaker - Driver of the #43 GOJO Corvette - "The race was over for us in the first turn. We were really looking forward to this race too. At Mid Ohio we proved we were a contender for the victory when we were running second chasing the eventual winner in the last ten minutes of the race when a fuel pump failed us. Practice and qualifying went very well here at Road America and we thought we really had a chance at winning. Unfortunately our race was over right after it started, and we were forced to drive home to a tenth place finish. Next weekend we will be at Toronto, and the whole USFilter Planet Earth Motorsports team is looking forward to a good finish in the #43 GOJO Chevrolet Corvette."
In the C2K Class, the Comptech Sport Acura Integra GS-Rs were driven to a fifth and sixth place finish. Placing fifth was the driving duo of Dick Starita and John Wymore. Sixth was the driving pair of 1999 Touring Class Champions Wayne and Will Nonnamaker in the #41 Integra.
The next event for the USFilter Planet Earth Motorsports team will be next weekend (July 15th) at the Toronto Grand Prix, a two hour race held as a support race to the FedEx CART Championship.
