TRG/iRise Continue to Dominate With a 1-2 Finish at Phoenix
Petaluma, Ca. (May 14, 2006) - TRG returned to Phoenix International Raceway this weekend to defend last year's historic double victory, having won both the GT and the DP classes in 2005. This time around, the team again executed flawlessly on all fronts and was victorious with a 1-2 finish to remain atop the points lead for both the drivers and the team championships. The strong finish also gives Pontiac a strong lead for the manufacturers championship. A split pit strategy and several full course yellows kept the team guessing, with both cars taking the lead at different times. As the checkered flag waved, the #64 TRG/iRise Pontiac GTO.R came away with the win.
Kelly Collins, piloting the #64 TRG/iRise Pontiac GTO.R, took the car to the checker to give TRG it's 4th win of the season. "I really had to drive the wheels off the car throughout my stint in the race, but the car and team performed flawlessly. I was being super careful at the end as my rear tires were nearly gone and Andy and Boris were on me. It seemed like we had the competition covered this weekend, as this is a real good track for us."
In the #65 TRG/F-1 Air/Alpine Bagel/iRise Pontiac GTO.R, Andy Lally commented, "We had a great car and were able to make up our lap and then charge through these guys. I had a good battle with Auberlin, Lidell and Said, and by the time I got around those guys I pretty much used my tires up. Kelly and I were running about the same pace and we were each strong in different parts of the track. I could not take a chance on a bonzai pass on my teammate, and as close as our pace was to each other, it was tough to make a move. We came into this weekend with a 4 point lead in the championship and we tripled it. When you think about it like that, I guess I really can't complain."
Team owner Kevin Buckler had this to say, "What a fantastic weekend for TRG & iRise, and what a dominant performance. The entire team did an unbelievable job. Paul and Kelly drove a really smart race. Phoenix has been very good to us. I didn't think we could ever be smiling as big as we were last year- but I am right now. Marc drove very, very well tonight and Andy drove fast and smart and brought the car home to further our points lead. The highlight was probably Andy's inside pass of Boris Said, going into turn 1. All I could think of was carbon fiber and dollar signs going up in smoke, but he made the pass stick & it was clean. Phoenix is definately a good track for the GTO.R's. We nailed the driving, set-up & strategy this weekend as well."
The team will have a week off before heading to Lime Rock Park in Lime Rock, CT for the next round of the Grand American Road Racing season. This race will be especially exciting for the team as it is the first and only event of the season that will be a GT only event. The event is scheduled to take place Memorial Day weekend, with the main event on Monday, May 29th at 2:00pm EST. The race will be broadcast live on SPEED TV beginning at 2:30pm EST (11:30am PST).
