Phoenix; Risi Ferrari Team has stellar run

The #12 Risi Competizione Ferrari 333 SP had a stellar run at the Sun Automotive 200 at Phoenix International Raceway Saturday night, April 22nd, finishing second with drivers Mimmo Schiattarella and Ralf Kelleners piloting. The only Ferrari in the Grand Am field started from the 17th position after having their original pole-sitting time disallowed following a post-qualifying technical inspection where the car could not pass the air box test. Schiattarella re-qualified the car on Friday in the 21st position, but due to engine changes by other teams, started from the inside of the ninth row. The Italian cut through the field in the early laps; to seventh position after the first lap, the fifth position after the second lap, position four after lap three, and to position three by the fourth lap. He then moved to second position when the leader (#16 Dyson Ford Riley & Scott) pitted on lap 49. The #12 Risi Ferrari moved back to third position after their scheduled pit stop and driver change on lap 71. Finally the team retook the second position on lap 126 of the 133-lap race. "Our finish was not too bad," said Schiattarella. "We think we can win with this combination, but it was not our position today. I am happy for the team; to be on the podium is always good. For the points championship it was very, very important. We did everything possible to finish and it was a difficult race." "We were hoping to fight for a win or second place and we achieved that," said closing driver Ralf Kelleners. "We seemed to only be capable of third tonight, but we got a bit of luck when the Dyson team cut a tire. Our finish is good for the championship points." "We're very happy," said Technical Director and team co-owner John McLoughlin. "The car worked well and the drivers did a good job on a very slippery track. The track was a little different than the set-up we had prepared last night." Race winners of the second Grand Am race of the 2000 season were Jack Baldwin and Irv Hoerr in the #74 Robinson Racing Judd Riley & Scott, finishing 48.053 seconds ahead of the #12 Risi Ferrari. Third place finishers were the #16 Dyson Riley & Scott of James Weaver and Andy Wallace who lead the majority of the race. The next race will be May 7th at Homestead/Miami for Round Three of the 2000 Grand American Road Racing Series.
