(Phoenix, AZ) 8 September 05--Michael Shank Racing was up to speed quickly in the first day of practice for Saturday night's Phoenix 250, as the Mears Motor Coach Machine carded the fastest lap of the day with a 57.302-second lap of the 1.51-mile Phoenix International Raceway. Oswaldo Negri and former Phoenix resident Mike Borkowski are sharing the Pontiac-Riley combination, and the two got off to a good start to the weekend.

"The car feels pretty strong and it of course feels good to end the day on top," said Negri, who qualified third for this race last year with the team. "We made some improvements after the first session, and I have been trying to get used to the car because it's different from what I have been driving. I am just excited about getting the chance to be driving with Mike (Borkowski) and to work with Mike Shank and his guys this weekend. Hopefully I can contribute to the effort and we can keep improving tomorrow and get a good spot on the grid to be in a good position for the race."

Team owner Mike Shank was pleased with the laps his two drivers were putting down in the hot desert night, and is looking to keep the momentum up through the weekend.

"This is a great start to the weekend," said Shank. "Oz (Negri) set some good times and Mike (Borkowski) was right there too, so we feel like we are moving in the right direction. It is so competitive in this series, so to be quickest by three-tenths is really something else. But we aren't going crazy-we just want to keep working on the car and improving so we can be in a good spot late in the race on Saturday."

Qualifying will take place at 6:45 PM local time on Friday, and the race is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 PM on Saturday, with the Speed Channel broadcast slated for 4:00 PM ET on Sunday afternoon.
