MICHAEL MCDOWELL AND GUY COSMO LOOK TO TAKE OVER POINTS LEAD IN MCDOWELL'S HOMETOWN OF PHOENIX
MOORESVILLE, NC (May 9, 2006) When the crew of the No.19 -- Playboy/Uniden/Palms Ford-Powered Crawford Daytona Prototype team unloads at Phoenix International Raceway they will only have one thing in mind, taking over the points lead. The Mooresville, NC-based team currently sits second in the Rolex Series Team Points Standings one point from taking over the top position.
"The West Coast races are important for my fans, friends and family," said Michael McDowell. "I was born in Phoenix and spent most of my career on the West Coast. Phoenix is my home track and a lot of my family and friends will be there so I would love to get a good result. The main thing for me is that I would like to dedicate the race to my mother who passed away earlier this year. She was a huge part of my success and my biggest fan and I know that she will be there with all of us."
The team's consistency and determination continues to shine as they are currently at the top of the Rolex Series Team Performance Index and Michael McDowell leads the Driver Performance Index. Once again the team's regular driver Memo Gidley will be there to support the team, anxiously awaiting his return to the cockpit of the No.19 machine. Meanwhile, Guy Cosmo will continue to fill in for Gidley. Cosmo will be extra busy this weekend commuting back and forth between Phoenix and Houston.
"I think we're going to see some close racing at Phoenix," said Guy Cosmo. "I'm looking forward to testing all day Thursday with the team in Phoenix and then catching a plane to Houston to run the ALMS race there on Friday. It's going to be a very busy weekend but hopefully we'll be able to come out of Phoenix leading the points. We've racked up enough top-four finishes and we're ready to break into the top-three!"
Practice for the Gainsco Grand Prix is scheduled to begin on Thursday, with the qualifying race to take place on Friday night. The race is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start Saturday night and will be televised on Speed Monday, May 14th at 3:00 p.m. ET.
