(May 19, 2001) John Macaluso (Old Forge, NY/Winter Haven, FL), team owner of the Miracle Motorsports/Serta Mattress #6 entry, was very pleased with the performance of the car this weekend. It was very consistent, quick, and remarkably smooth, handling quite well.
After placing fifth in a rainy qualifying session on Friday, the drivers and= team were looking forward to a strong run in Saturday's six-hour event from Watkins Glen International, Watkins Glen, NY. Ross Bentley (Vancouver, B.C.), started the race at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, under sunny and warm skies, quite the change from rainy weather earlier in the week.
The Miracle Motorsports/Serta Mattress entry was holding steady around the third place position for the first hour of the race, with the #37 Intersport= entry and the #16 Dyson Racing entry running first and second. During the second pit stop, Brent Sherman (Barrington, IL) took the controls and ran impressive lap times. Brent was able to run 12 laps, approximately 25 minutes, before an unfortunate on track incident took place between the #6 entry and the #15 Fordahl Porsche with Kim Hiskey at the wheel. Both cars were badly damaged, and both drivers were taken to the hospital for observation. Sherman was released Saturday evening and is doing well, but a= little sore. Hiskey was also released with a minor concussion, but is expected to be all right.
"It was a very unfortunate incident, but luckily both drivers weren't seriously injured," stated John Macaluso. "Cars can be rebuilt - people cannot. We are glad everyone involved will be okay. We will obviously not make Round 5 at Lime Rock (Grand Prix of Lime Rock, CT, scheduled Monday, May 28, 2001), but we will rebuild the car and continue on with our season, probably with Elkhart Lake on July 8th."
