Defending race winners off to a fast start in south Jersey
(Millville, NJ) 1 May 2009-Michael Shank Racing scored 2nd and 6th last weekend in Rolex Sports Car Series competition, and kept up that positive momentum in the first day of practice for the next round of racing at New Jersey Motorsports Park as the two team entries closed the second practice session 1-2 on the sheets in preparation for Sunday's Verizon 250.
The team is looking to return to the NJMP victory lane, having raced to a victory with drivers Mark Patterson and Oswaldo Negri in the 2008 Rolex visit to the track. Both cars showed strength on Friday, as the morning practice session saw the No. 6 of John Pew and Michael Valiante setting the fastest time with a 1:14.905-second lap.
The tables turned in the afternoon, as the No. 60 Ford-Riley was atop the sheets with a quick lap time of 1:15.302-seconds, with the No. 6 machine just behind with a quick time of 1:15.523-seconds.
The starting grid will be set with a 15-minute qualifying session on Saturday, and the team is looking to keep a great NJMP return visit going by taking strong positions on the grid ahead of Sunday's two hour and forty-five minute round 3 of the 2009 season.
"We're really happy with how things have started off this weekend," said team owner Mike Shank. "All four of our drivers did great jobs today, even when the conditions weren't perfect out there. It's a good feeling anytime you come to come back to a track where you've won, and it's even better to come back and be so strong right off the truck. We know we have to convert this speed into a good result on Sunday, and this was a great start to the weekend and hopefully we can just keep it going."
Coverage this weekend will be carried by SPEED beginning at 1 p.m. EDT.
