SunTrust Team Works All Night to Rebuild Car for Mid-Ohio Race Today
Lexington, Ohio (August 27, 2005) -- The No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley team worked all through the night to rebuild their race car after it caught fire during qualifying yesterday. The team had to strip the car down to the bare frame and rebuilt out. Fortunately, they had most of the parts already on-site, but sent a truck in from their shop in Indianapolis with the remaining parts they needed.
Fifteen crew members worked fifteen hours straight to repair the No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley Mk.XI chassis number 008 for a total of 225 man hours. The estimated cost of the rebuild was $150,000.
"It was a pretty amazing effort," said car owner/driver Wayne Taylor, who was at the wheel when the fuel line ruptured, causing the fire. "Everyone knew though that if anyone could turn around a car that heavily damaged before the race, it was this team. The team really worked hard and put it back together so that we could make the warm-up this morning. It is just incredible. The support from the other teams was really amazing. Chip Ganassi called me and offered his third car if we needed it and so many of the other teams offered their help to us. That is part what makes Grand American so special. We race on the track, but we're all friends in the paddock."
"I'm really proud of this team and that we were able to get this thing rebuilt," added Bill Riley, owner of Riley Technologies. "It was a real team effort. We were here all night to make this morning's warm-up. Everyone at the shop in Indy had left work already and they all went back to the shop to work and load up the things we needed. Two of them drove down and arrived at 1:00 in the morning, then stayed on through. Also, EMCO fed our guys steaks for dinner in their suite last night and that was great. We just really appreciated all the offers from everyone in the paddock. The Ganassi team was the first to offer anything we needed, including their spare car. We did take their offer on a few small parts, hoses, and the like. I sent the guys back to the hotel after morning warm-up so they could get showered and changed. Everyone is back and we're ready to go racing. We still have the same philosophy -- to try to finish ahead of the 01 car and get as many points as possible."
