SpeedSource Scores Podium at Mid Ohio
The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was home to Round Seven of the GRAND-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 as the SpeedSource team traveled to the historic track. The 2010 season has been a dominant showing by SpeedSource and their Mazda RX-8's. SpeedSource has been able to place one of their three team cars on the podium for every race this season. Saturday's Emco Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio was no exception as Adam Christodoulou and John Edwards captured a second place finish in the #68 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda RX-8. Meanwhile, championship leaders Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal kept their momentum rolling by securing a strong fourth place finish.
Adam Christodoulou, the 2009 Star Mazda Series Champion, qualified the #68 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda RX-8 third on the starting grid. As the green flag waved, Christodoulou followed the GT Class leaders and drove his #68 Mazda RX-8 away from the field. When Christodoulou pitted after his 1.5hour opening stint in the scorching heat, co-driver John Edwards was in a prime position to take the GT class podium. Through pit sequencing and race strategy, the #68 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda RX-8 inherited the GT lead in the race's final 30 minutes. Edwards fought with the #94 car for the lead until finally being passed down the long back straightaway. The driving duo earned their second podium of the season with a solid 2nd place finish.
"That was one of the most intense races I've driven," recalled John Edwards. "The heat outside and the competition on track made it very tough, but the SpeedSource guys gave us a great car and made some good calls to put us in contention at the end."
Current GT points leaders Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal extended their lead this weekend with a 4th place finish. Assentato took over qualifying and starting driver duties for his #69 FXDD Mazda RX-8 and steadily raced through the GT class. As has been typical all season, Assentato was able to acquire a few spots in the race's opening hour while keeping the #69 FXDD Mazda RX-8 clear of trouble. When co-driver Jeff Segal took over for the race's conclusion, the #69 Mazda was in contention to challenge for their fifth podium of the 2010 season. After a very hot race in the Ohio sun, Segal captured a 4th place finish along with very valuable championship points. The duo now holds a 10-point margin to second place in the Driver's Standings.
Entering the weekend just one-point behind the #69 Mazda RX-8 were co-drivers Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito in the #70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8. Tremblay carried his qualifying momentum to the race start and quickly ran up to the top five in GT after the race's first pit stop. However, shortly after returning to green flag racing the #70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8 was heavily damaged after colliding with an out-of-control GT car. The team leaves Mid-Ohio with a 12th place finish.
The GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series returns to Daytona International Speedway on July 3rd.
