PRUETT PUTS TELMEX LEXUS-RILEY ON POLE IN MEXICO CITY
MEXICO CITY (March 3, 2006) -- CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates will start on the inside of Row 1 for tomorrow's Rolex Sports Car Series event at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriquez. As part of the no.01 TELMEX car's race strategy for this weekend's 100-lap event, Scott Pruett qualified the car and will start the race before handing the driving duties off to Mexico City native Luis Diaz.
Pruett was the fastest of 24 Daytona Prototypes on the 2.518-mile circuit, posting a top time of 1:22.732 (108.785mph) on his eighth lap of the 15-minute session. The pole marked the 16th for the no.01 team in 28 career Grand American starts.
After already bettering their second-place qualifying effort last season in Mexico, the TELMEX car will look to improve on a podium finish of third when Pruett and Diaz start Round 2 of the Rolex Series tomorrow at 3:15 pm (local time).
LUIS DIAZ "Scott did a fantastic job for the team today, obviously. We have the car in a good position, knowing that the balance is pretty much right between Scott's driving style and mine. I think Scott will run the car a bit stiffer, whereas I'll make some adjustments to soften it up when I get in. Coming off the Daytona 24 Hours, this is just another huge race for us. Scott and I came close to winning here last year in the TELMEX car, but we still have a few more places to go up the podium before we're satisfied."
SCOTT PRUETT "My whole focus for this weekend was getting the pole, and in turn starting the race in the clear so Luis could have the car in a position to win in the end. We accomplished the first part of that today by starting where we are, but our work doesn't stop there. Mexico City is all about Luis. I'm just here along with the Ganassi team, doing everything it takes right now to get the TELMEX car to the front to stay. Hopefully the race will play out in our favor and we can make a trip to Victory Lane for all the folks from TELMEX this weekend."
