SunTrust Racing Qualifies Tenth for the Road and Track 250 at Laguna Seca
Laguna Seca, California (April 28, 2005) -The No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley team is hoping that history will repeat itself this weekend, as they start from the tenth position on the grid in Sunday's Road and Track 250 at the U.S. Sports Car Invitational at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The SunTrust team started from the same qualifying spot earlier this season at the Grand Prix of Miami and came up the race winner. At the most recent event in early April at the California Speedway in Fontana, the championship points-leading SunTrust team started from the eleventh position on the grid and finished second in the closest finish in Grand American history.
Today's pole winner was Oswaldo Negri, Jr. of Aventura, Florida in the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Lexus Riley. Negri is not a newcomer to the series, but this is his first race of the 2005 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series season.
Wayne Taylor (starting driver)
Regarding qualifying: "The car is okay, but I didn't get the best out of it. For some weird reason, I'm losing a lot out of Turn 11. I have to say that I'm very, very happy and proud of Oswaldo for getting the pole." Regarding the race and large field: "This is the biggest field ever. We have not had a single practice session without a minimum of at least three yellow flags. There are yellows all the time! As I've said before, the race will come down to the last 20 minutes. I need to give the car to Max in the best position possible."
Regarding traffic: "We have to consider that they (the other competitors) are overloaded and don't have time to look at their mirrors. We have to be very careful."
Friday Practice Session #1: The SunTrust Racing team was fifth fastest with a time of 1:26.103 at 93.572 mph with Max Angelelli at the wheel. Friday Practice Session #2: Wayne Taylor clocked a 1:26.515 at 93.126, the seventh fastest in Friday's second practice session. Saturday Practice Session #3: The SunTrust Racing team, with Angelelli back at the wheel, clocked a 1:25.212 at 94.550 mph, the third fastest in Saturday morning's practice round and the fastest session for the SunTrust Pontiac Riley Mk.XI.
The Road and Track 250 is a 250 mile/112-lap or two-hour and 45-minute time limit race and will be televised live at 3:00 p.m. ET on Speed Channel.
