James glad to line up on the inside for the start
(Monterey, CA) 19 May 2007--Michael Shank Racing will start the U.S. Sports Car Invitational from the fourth and sixth rows in Sunday's Daytona Prototype-only Rolex Sports Car Series race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Ian James, who will partner with John Pew in Sunday's two hour and forty-five minute race, led the Michael Shank Racing squad with a 1:22.183-second lap to secure seventh on the grid in the Playboy-liveried Lexus-Riley. The affable Englishman will turn over the controls to Pew, who is making his first start with Michael Shank Racing. The qualifying effort was James' first of the season, and James will be looking to lead the race as he has done twice so far this season.
"The car got better as the session went on and I had a lot of grip," said James, who will also race in the GT class event on Saturday. "We'd of course like to be a little bit further up, but I think we should be in good shape tomorrow. I am glad to be starting on the inside because who knows what the start will be like. Hopefully we can get through with no problems and start moving forward."
2006 Trueman Award winner Mark Patterson will line up twelfth on the grid, matching his best qualifying result of the season so far as he carded a 1:23.580-second lap during the fifteen-minute qualifying session.
"We didn't get much clear running with all the traffic out there, but the car is good and Oz (Negri) has shown some great speed this weekend," said Patterson. "We are a lot faster than we were last year so it's pretty exciting around this beautiful track. It's been fun to have John (Pew) with us this weekend and hopefully we can both have good runs tomorrow."
