EXPERIENCE, MOMENTUM KEYS TO LAGUNA SECA SUCCESS FOR NEW CENTURY MORTGAGE
INDIANAPOLIS (April 27, 2005) -- Sporting over 99 marvelous miles of West Coast shoreline, Monterey County has more blind curves and breathtaking elevation changes than any other California County, but sports car aficionados know road racing's "Granddaddy of Them All" lies 15 miles inland. Californians Stefan Johansson and Cort Wagner will lead New Century Mortgage Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca's signature Corkscrew for this weekend's Road & Track 250 as they take their 500 horsepower Daytona Prototype through its first paces around the 2.238-mile road course featuring the legendary three-story, spine-tingling drop.
"I'm very familiar with the layout having run open wheel and sports cars at Laguna Seca," said Johansson of his history at the famous circuit. "The track is very demanding, and you really have to know how to hit your marks. Although no one has ever driven the Daytona Prototype here before, I think the cars will be very fun to drive, and of course the competition is always close in this series. I think experience will play a factor to some degree, with most every driver having run this track at one point or another. But it will come down to who gets their car dialed in and is able to sustain momentum."
Co-driver of the no.02 New Century Mortgage Lexus-Riley Wagner is ready to get back into the seat after a three week gap in the Rolex Series schedule. The native Californian stands a strong fourth with Johansson in the quest for the Series Championship with 77 markers, just eight behind Ganassi stablemates Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz.
"Laguna Seca is a world class facility that really needs no introduction," said Wagner. "I won here in 1998 and finished second in '99 in the GT class, and have raced Skip Barber and other sports cars as well. The Corkscrew is a magical part of this track that sets it apart from any other proper road racing circuit around."
