FONTANA, Calif. (March 23, 2002) -- Notes from the Yamaha Indy 400 at the California Speedway:

Hemelgarn Racing announced their second driver for the Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series. Native American driver Cory Witherhill will join Aaron Fike on the two-car Hemelgarn 91/Johnson Motorsports team when the series gets underway at Kansas Speedway in July.

Several drivers in Sunday's Yamaha Indy 400 have driven at the California Speedway in the CART series. The list of drivers includes 1998 CART season finale winner, Jimmy Vasser, Memo Gidley, Gil de Ferran, Helio Castroneves, Alex Barron, Al Unser Jr. and Richie Hearn. Airton Dare, Felipe Giaffone, Shigeaki Hattori and Jeff Ward have competed at California Speedway in Indy Lights.

While the two-mile oval at California Speedway is now in its sixth year of operation, the road racing circuit was built just last year. Today's Grand American Rolex 400 marks the first time the road course has been used.

After winning the pole for the Grand Am race, the The Doran-Lista team will start from the back of the field after opting to make a post-qualifying engine change.
