SABATES TO BE RECOGNIZED AT UNC CHARLOTTE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES
CONCORD, N.C. (May 10, 2007) -- Felix Sabates Jr., co-owner of Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS), will be awarded with an honorary degree of Doctor of Public Service by The University of North Carolina at Charlotte during its commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m. ET. Sabates is being recognized for his generous philanthropic contributions, unwavering dedication to the Charlotte community and continual support for UNC Charlotte. He served on the board of directors of The Foundation of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Inc. from 1994-2005.
"I have seen this institution grow from Charlotte College to The University of North Carolina at Charlotte," said Sabates. "I am grateful to receive such an honor from such a great university, and it is something I will cherish for the rest of my life."
Sabates first entered the world of stock car racing as an owner in 1987, when he purchased a research and development team from then-owner and popular Charlotte businessman, Rick Hendrick. SABCO Racing was founded, and for Sabates it was just the beginning of a long, successful career on the NASCAR circuit. In 2001, Sabates and CART owner Chip Ganassi formed CGRFS and since the combination has recorded 11 wins, 14 poles, 84 top-five finishes and 206 top-10 finishes in over 700 starts in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series and Busch Series competition.
In addition to racing, Sabates has ventured into other forms of sports and business as well, including custom yacht building with the purchase of Victory Lane Enterprises, Ltd. In 1988 he became the original owner of the Charlotte Hornets basketball team, and is now part owner of the Charlotte Bobcats and Charlotte Checkers. Sabates currently owns Infiniti, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz dealerships and is the president and CEO of FSS Holdings, Inc., a North Carolina-based company with holdings in several U.S. and international companies.
Over the years Sabates has made many philanthropic contributions and has received numerous honors and awards for his charitable efforts. Belmont Abbey College (Belmont, N.C.) has a dining hall named for him and Elon College (Elon, N.C.) awarded him an Honorary Doctorate. He also received a "Special Blessing" in writing from Pope John Paul II.
