20TH Anniversary Grand Prix of Miami To Run Thursday, February 28 - Saturday, March 2

MIAMI, FL (1/14/02) - The race schedule for the 20th Anniversary Grand Prix of Miami, featuring the season-opener for the Indy Racing League and the Rolex Sports Car Series Nextel 250, is set for Thursday, February 28 - Saturday, March 2 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The schedule is subject to change.

Both races will take place on Saturday, March 2 at the Speedway. The Grand Prix of Miami, the season-opener for the Indy Racing League's 15-race schedule, will begin at 1 p.m. with pre-race ceremonies starting at noon on Saturday, March 2. Following the Indy Racing event, the Rolex Sports Car Series Nextel 250 will begin at 3:30 p.m. on the Speedway's 2.21-mile road course.

Thursday, February 28 will serve as Practice Day for both Indy Racing and the Rolex Sports Car Series, while Friday, March 1 will be Pole/Qualifying Day for both series.

Both races will be televised live. The Grand Prix of Miami, Indy Racing's season-opener, will be broadcast live on ABC starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. Following the IRL race, the Rolex Sports Car Series Nextel 250 will be televised live on Speed Channel.

At the 20th Anniversary Grand Prix of Miami, fans will have the opportunity to see two exciting types of racing on one Saturday as the speed of Indy Racing is coupled with the world-class road racing of the Rolex Sports Cars Series at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Grand Prix of Miami features the same cars and drivers that compete in the Indianapolis 500 racing at speeds over 200 miles-per-hour on the Homestead-Miami Speedway 1.5-mile oval. Following the Grand Prix of Miami, the Rolex Sports Car series, featuring Porsche, BMW and Corvette, will race in the Nextel 250 at the Speedway's 2.21-mile road course.

Last year, the Indy Racing League made its debut at Homestead-Miami Speedway's 1.5-mile oval as Sam Hornish Jr. edged Sarah Fisher and Miami resident Eliseo Salazar in a thrilling finish. Hornish, Fisher, and Salazar along with former Indianapolis 500 winners, Al Unser Jr., Buddy Lazier and Eddie Cheever, Jr., are expected back for this year's Grand Prix. Joining these IRL veterans will be last year's Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves and two-time CART champion Gil de Ferran of Marlboro Team Penske which recently announced plans to compete exclusively in the Indy Racing League in 2002.

The Rolex Sports Car Series features two categories of competition: SportsRacing Prototypes and GT cars. The categories are subdivided into five classes - SportsRacing Prototype, SportsRacing Prototype II, GTS, GT and American GT, all of which will be competing at the Homestead-Miami Speedway road course. Fans may view all the action either from the grandstand or from unique seating areas within the scenic road course.

Tickets to the 20th Anniversary Grand Prix of Miami are available. Race-day tickets for Saturday, March 2 start at $25 with youth (18 and under) tickets priced at $15. Three-day packages, including Race Day, Pole and Qualifying Day, Practice Day, and Paddock Pass, are available for $70. Children 12 and under are admitted free on Thursday and Friday with a paid adult admission.

Season tickets for the 2002 season at Homestead-Miami Speedway are also available. In addition to seating for the 20th Anniversary Grand Prix of Miami, season ticket packages include seating for the first-ever NASCAR Championship Weekend, the season-finales for the NASCAR Winston Cup, Busch Grand National and Craftsman Truck Series, November 14-17 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
