FONTANA, CALIF (March 22, 2002) - Notes from the Yamaha Indy 400 at the California Speedway.

The Yamaha Indy 400 is the Indy Racing League's first appearance on a 2-mile track. It also marks the first time for a 400-mile race distance.

The last four Indy Racing League events have been won from the pole position. Jaques Lazier won at Chicagoland in 2001, Sam Hornish won the 2001 season finale at Texas and the 2002 season opener at Miami and Helio Castroneves won last week at Phoenix.

Jimmy Vasser was frustrated after his first day in an IRL car at California Speedway. He was 20th on the speed chart after experiencing fuel pick up problems and a chassis problem. The team is using the Yamaha 400 as a test for the Indianapolis 500 in May. The team is also testing its CART car today in Florida.

Jeret Schroeder has been entered in the PDM Racing Dallara, replacing Tyce Carlson, who retired last week.

Anthony Lazzaro, who was scheduled to see double duty in both the Indy and sports car race, has not been cleared to drive. Lazzaro was injured in the Indy race at Phoenix, suffering a slight vertebrae fracture and is expected to be out three to four weeks.

Paul Menard, son of Indy Racing League Team owner John Menard, will compete in Saturday's Grand American Sports car race in the FLIS Motorsports Corvette.

Derek Hill, son of World Driving Champion Phil Hill, will compete in the Grand Am race, driving a GTS-class Saleen S7R for Park Palce Ltd.
