Guy Cosmo steps in at Iowa Speedway and delivers.
With J.C. France spending the weekend with his family, following the tragic loss t of family member Dr. Bruce Kennedy, Brumos Racing called on Guy Cosmo to co-drive the team's #59 car with Hurley Haywood for Friday night's Rolex Grand-Am Series race at Iowa Speedway. Cosmo delivered.
"All-in-all, it was a great weekend," noted Cosmo. "Of course these were terrible circumstances and my condolences go out to JC and his family. I'm glad I could help out and fill in for him. Meanwhile, this was a great opportunity for me to get familiar with the Brumos team. I want to thank Brumos Porsche, RedBull and Mike Colucci Racing for considering me."
Guy arrived at Iowa Speedway with the unique status of being a winning veteran at the track, having already posted a win for 2007 at the venue. In the April 21st Koni Challenge race at Iowa Speedway, Cosmo took home a first place finish, racing for Fountain Motorspsorts in a BMW 330i.
"After making a seat insert for myself in the #59 car, I literally 'fit' right in, "said Guy. "The Riley chassis was great to drive. I realize now why this car is the car to beat in the series. It's very forgiving and always seems to be within its setup window - it was almost like driving a go kart - very nimble and responsive. And the Porsche power-plant is just racy. It revs high, makes terrific power and sounds just right. I really enjoyed the whole package."
"I got up to speed quickly and was fairly comfortable in the car right away," added Cosmo. "We made good progress on the cars during practice. Unfortunately, we went the wrong way on our setup for qualifying. It was disappointing, as we were much quicker during practice. I qualified 5 tenths behind the #58 car and we sat 12th on the grid for the race. That wasn't, however, indicative of how strong the #59 Brumos car was."
In an effort to take advantage of Grand-Am's rule requiring a pit-stop within the 45 minute window, the team set a race strategy calling for a stop on the first lap.
"The team's call to pit on lap one was an excellent strategy," continued Guy. "That put us in position to move up through the pack during my stint and through our pit rotation. I manage to move up as high as 6th, then turned the car over to Hurley. Unfortunately, we lost a lap when we had a bit of trouble getting Hurley buckled in the car. However, Hurley had his typical stellar drive and managed to salvage a 12th place finish."
During the past few seasons, Cosmo has brought his talent and services to several of the top-tier prototype teams in the Grand American paddock. In 2006 Cosmo joined up with Finlay Motorsports filling in for an injured Memo Gidley in the #19 Playboy Uniden car. He was also instrumental in giving the Spirit of Daytona car it's best run ever at Watkins Glen. And, of course there was the popular 2nd place finish garnered by Guy, Memo and Michael McDowell at Utah to close out the season. This was Cosmo's first chance to drive the Riley/Porsche combination.
"The Riley/Porsche combination completes my list of having driven all of the current Daytona Prototypes in Grand-Am competition" said Guy. "I think that is a huge asset for me as I continue talking with teams for the 2008 season."
"Brumos Racing is an organization I've always targeted as one that I would like to be associated with," Guy remarked. "Everyone on the team was extremely nice to work with and they are all determined, enthusiastic and skilled people. Of course, what can you say about working with great drivers like David Donahue, Darren Law and Hurley Haywood? You'd be hard pressed to find more experienced drivers in the Grand-Am paddock. Mike Colucci runs a great program and, circumstances aside, it was an honor to get the call from him."
