TRG GTO.R Wins GT at Homestead
Homestead, Florida m- TRG's Kelly Collins and Paul Edwards drove their number 64/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R to victory today in GT for round three of the Grand American Rolex Series presented by Crown Royal Reserve run at Homestead Miami Speedway. Teammates RJ Valentine, Marc Bunting and Andy Lally finished their number 65/TRG/GTO/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/GTO.R in ninth.
Kelly Collins started the 64 GTO.R from his fifth place qualifying position where he was able to make up ground from a disappointing qualifying effort. Collins turned the car over to co-driver Paul Edwards on lap 39. Edwards was able to make his way through traffic into second position by lap 71. At the end the young Californian was as much as five seconds behind the leading 70 car. With just three laps to go, Edwards was able to negotiate traffic better than the leader and pass for the lead, making a near photo finish at the checker.
In the 65 car, RJ Valentine started from his seventh row qualifying position to run consistent lap times around the 2.3-mile, 11-turn modified oval course. Valentine turned over to Marc Bunting who kept the momentum of team going before handing over to Andy Lally who brought the car home in ninth.
Paul Edwards, #64/TRG/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "I had a great car under me tonight. Kelly did a great job to make up ground from our qualifying position and the cool air really favored our race setup. The handling of the car really gave me the confidence to hunt down the 70 car at the end of the race. We leave here with the drivers points lead, I am really looking forward to the rest of the year."
Kelly Collins, #64/TRG/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "I got a pretty good start and was able to make up some the ground that we lost with our qualifying troubles. The car was really good all of the way through my stint. Paul did a great job at the end to run down the leader and put the pass on him with two laps to go. Two wins in a row gives us the points lead and helps to make up for a tough Daytona 24."
Andy Lally, #65/TRG/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "There was a lot of car left when I got it, but at that time we were a couple of laps back. We really needed some luck with the yellows to get back into contention but it never happened."
Marc Bunting, #65/TRG/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "The car was good all race, we just had some bad breaks that we couldn't make up. Andy did all he could at the end to try and get us back into contention, but luck was not on our side tonight."
RJ Valentine, #65/TRG/F1 Air/Alpine Bagel/iRise/Pontiac GTO.R, "I had a good start, but I thought the track was slippery early which caused me to use a little more tire than normal. As the tires were going away I was able to keep the pace up before handing over to Marc."
Kevin Buckler, TRG team owner, "Unbelievable drive by Paul at the end, one of the best stints I have ever witnessed. Kelly did a great job to get us to the front and position the car for a good finish. Marc, RJ and Andy had a good car but just could not get the breaks with the pace car. We are in the points with the drivers and Pontiac, a great day at Homestead for TRG!"
