Miami challenge

Terry Borcheller and Bell Motorsports had a difficult weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Fla., but recovered to post a solid race result. Borcheller, of Gainesville, Ga., and Forest Barber of Fort Worth, Tex., were hoping to repeat their win in the Rolex Sports Car Series season opener, the Rolex 24 at Daytona, but mechanical gremlins interfered.

Barber qualified the No. 54 Doran-Pontiac 14th on the 42-car grid with a time of one minute 16.470 seconds on the 2.3-mile infield road course. He started the race ready to charge, but was spun on the first lap by another car. The team's woes continued as the car lost its brake lights, resulting in a lengthy repair that cost a lap. Barber charged back to 12th in the Daytona Prototype class before Borcheller took over after 54 minutes of the two-hour 33-minute race. He regained the lost lap and moved up to finish sixth.

"For the weekend we had, I'm real happy to end up with what we did," Borcheller said. "We had some small handling deficiencies in the past, but it took big setup changes to correct them. We also had some mechanical and electrical issues the first two days, so Forest had barely been in the car before qualifying and we had done almost no work on our new setup. Consequently, we were 'way behind.

"Our race started like the weekend, when Forest was hit on the first lap and then our brake lights quit working. But we came back for a good finish."
