Terry Borcheller will be chasing points at Homestead-Miami Speedway this weekend. Although it's only the second race of the 2003 Rolex Sports Car Series, the Phoenix driver knows every race counts. He and Forest Barber of Fort Worth, Tex., will drive the No. 54 Doran JE 4 Daytona Prototype prepared by Bell Motorsports.
"You hate to think about the points chase this early, but you have to," Borcheller said. "We couldn't test before the first race and we didn't know if the car would make a full stint because were having engine heating issues. So we pitted every other lap to make sure Forest and I both got points. It's something we're very much aware of, and something we really want is a championship."
Borcheller and Barber tested the Doran race car at Moroso Motorsport Park in Florida last week. Borcheller said the test helped exorcise some gremlins the team encountered in the Rolex 24 at Daytona earlier this month.
"It was a very positive test from every direction," he noted. "We learned a lot about the car in a short time. It will give us a car that will be reliable and there's a good chance that we'll be very competitive. The team has worked so hard on this car! If it hadn't been for a couple of unforeseen bugs, we would have fared well in the 24-hour. Kevin [Doran] and the Doran group have done a phenomenal job in giving us the framework for something that's going to be really good this year."
Race fans will enjoy a double feature this weekend, as the Rolex Series shares Homestead track time with the IRL IndyCar Series.
Borcheller's website, www.TBORCHELLER.com, should be up in the next few weeks. The site will include race information, personal notes and links to all of Borcheller's personal sponsors.
The 250-mile Rolex Sports Car Series race is scheduled for 3 pm ET, Saturday, March 1 on the 2.4-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway road course in Homestead, Fla. The race will air on SPEED Channel on Saturday, March 8 at 3 pm ET.
Terry Borcheller's 2003 sponsors include K&N Performance Filters, Infinity2 Nutrition, Dark Dog, Alpinestars, Bell Helmets, Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, Gatorz and Goodyear. He will also present corporate programs for Pirelli Tires and Saleen.
