TAFEL RACING QUALIFIES FIRST AND SECOND AT HOMESTEAD
HOMESTEAD (March 25) - Wolf Henzler qualified the 72 Tafel Racing NEC Porsche GT3 Cup on the pole in the GT class with a lap time of 1:21:679 at the Linder Industrial Komatsu Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead-Miami Speedway in round three of the Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve.
Henzler, who qualified the same car on the pole at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and second at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, commented on what this means for Tafel Racing in their push toward the points championship." My team at Tafel Racing did a very good job all around and I am happy for my teammate Andrew Davis. I was able to do some good lap times, so it looks good for the race but the race is long, and a lot can happen " With a field of twenty-eight cars in DP and 19 in GT, traffic will add to the challenges of night racing. "At Daytona we could go side by side through the banking; here it is very difficult so this is a harder race to drive. In the night you only see the lights from the DP car, but you can't tell how many are coming; it may be one or two or five." Henzler's co-driver for the 2006 season will be Robin Liddell.
Teammate Andrew Davis qualified just behind Henzler with a lap time of 1:22:051 in the 73 Tafel Racing NEC Porsche GT3 Cup, giving Tafel Racing both front row positions. "The front row is the way to do it so we can at least try to make our own luck. Catching the yellows right and having good pit stops, all of those variables play a role, but we should be in a really good spot to finish on the podium, which is what we're after."
Qualifying on the front row anywhere is great, but this track is a good luck charm for Davis. "I have a love affair with this place. I came down here three or four years ago and in my first race had the pole and ever since than I've always been on the front row here, so this is one of my favorite tracks."
Charles Espenlaub of Lutz, Fl. qualified the 74 Tafel Racing Rambrandt Charms Porsche GT3 Cup in sixth position with a best lap time of 1:22:276.Espenalub, who raced in the SPEED Touring series last season, has seen quicker lap times each time he has gone out this weekend. "We lost a session yesterday and we're starting to play a little catch-up. The crew is working hard at it and it's getting much better." Espenlaub and co-driver Eric Lux are looking to improve on their 10th place finish in Mexico.
Jim Tafel, team owner and co-driver of the 73 car is looking for this front row start to be the beginning of a podium finish. "It means a lot to me. It shows that all of our hard work is beginning to pay off and I hope we can finish in that order. We've got to start putting some checks in the win column and this is the place to do it. It's beautiful here. The whole Grand Am organization has put together a great program. I wouldn't be anywhere else."
