Terms of the two-year contract were not released.

"Nextel is excited about the opportunity to sponsor the Grand-Am Nextel 250," said Mark Garzone, director of marketing for Nextel in Florida. "Sports car racing and Nextel are a winning combination."

The Grand-Am Nextel 250 will feature Ferrari, Ford, Chevrolet and Judd-powered open-cockpit SportsRacer protypes, along with Saleen Mustang, BMW M3 and Porsche GT sports cars, in a 250-mile race at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 7. Completing the weekend are Motorola Cup and American City Racing League events.

"We are very happy that Nextel chose Homestead-Miami Speedway for its first sponsorship of a Grand American race," said Curtis Gray, President of Homestead-Miami Speedway. "We feel it is fantastic that Nextel recognizes that a position with Homestead-Miami Speedway and Grand-Am racing will help them meet their regional marketing goals."

The Grand-Am Nextel 250 will be the third event for the new sports car series, headquartered in Daytona Beach, Fla.
