HOMESTEAD (May 4, 2000) – Didier Theys turned in the fastest time in Thursday’s unofficial testing for this weekend’s Grand-Am Nextel 250 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Theys recorded a lap of 1:11.49 (120.959 mph) on the 2.4-mile modified road circuit, which utilizes turns three and four of the 1.5-mile Speedway. Theys and Mauro Baldi will co-drive the Judd-powered Doran Special in Sunday’s event, the third race for the new Grand American Road Racing Association.
Qualifying to set the top 20 positions begins at 3:15 p.m. on Friday. Saturday’s schedule includes final Grand-Am qualifying and a three-hour Motorola Cup race. Sunday begins with an American City Racing League event at 11:30 a.m., followed by the 104-lap Grand-Am Nextel 250 at 1 p.m.
Second fastest was James Weaver in the Dyson Racing Riley & Scott Ford he shares with John Paul Jr., 120.438. He was followed by the Informix Riley & Scott Judd of Jack Baldwin and Irv Hoerr, 120.297 mph, and Scott Schubot and Oliver Gavin in a Ford-Lola, 120.092 mph.
Tickets will be available at the gate. Friday general admission tickets cost $5, with Saturday tickets $10 and Sunday $15. Weekend paddock passes cost an additional $20, with children admitted free to the grandstands and paddock when accompanied by a paying adult.
