Segal looks to keep fast start to rookie Rolex campaign going at Homestead
Grand-Am KONI Challenge GS Class Champion ready for Homestead "home race"
(Miami, FL) 28 March 08--Jeff Segal is a man on a mission. Last season, the young University of Miami graduate impressed with a heady run to the Grand-Am KONI Challenge GS Championship. That championship, along with some remarkable Rolex Series GT class outings, didn't go unnoticed, and Segal has been signed to the full 2008 Rolex Sports Car Series season with Speedsource, co-driving with Emil Assentato in the FXDD Mazda RX-8.
Segal will not only look to secure a tidy cash prize by taking the Grand-Am "Mesco Building For The Future Rookie of the Year" award in Rolex competition, but he will also return to defend his 2007 KONI Championship with Automatic Racing.
He got a good start to both pursuits in the opening round races at Daytona International in January, scoring fourth in KONI competition and then matching his career-best Rolex 24 result with a fifth-place finish in the RX-8. After a two-month break from racing, Segal is geared up for his Rolex competition return this weekend at Homestead Miami Speedway.
"It's been way too long since Daytona, but I am really looking forward to this weekend and picking up where we left off in the 24," said Segal. "Fifth wasn't what we were looking for but in a race like the 24, just to be able to finish is a good thing for the championship points. This weekend we just want to get some momentum going and hopefully make it up to the podium. The Mazda RX-8 should be strong here at Homestead, so we know we have the chance to do well."
The race also marks a home event for Segal, who graduated from the University of Miami last year, and now calls Miami home.
"This is definitely the easiest race for me to get to all season! A lot of my friends will be coming down from Miami to see me race, so hopefully we can put on a good show."
