Chevy Power Sweeps Front Row in Grand-Am at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as Jon Fogarty Extends his Lead as All-Time Pole Winner in Daytona Prototype; Boris Said Puts Marsh Corvette on Pole in Grand Touring
MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada (August 19, 2011) – Jon Fogarty powered the famous “Red Dragon” No. 99 GAINSO/Bob Stallings Racing Chevrolet Riley to the pole for the Montreal 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to extend his lead as the all-time pole winner in Grand-Am Daytona Prototype (DP). His lap of 1:32: 999 (104.866 mph) bested the lap of 1:33:681 (104.102 mph) laid down Ricky Taylor in the No. 10 SunTrust Chevrolet Dallara to end Taylor’s streak of consecutive pole positions at six to make it an all-Chevy power front row.
"The record is nice and everything, but it's not what we come here to do," Fogarty said after winning his 18th career pole and second of the season. "I won't disregard the fact that maybe I did feel a little bit of extra pressure. Ricky has been doing an awesome job all season, and they've been really tough to beat in qualifying."
In Grand Touring (GT), Boris Said put the No. 31 Marsh Racing Corvette on the pole with a lap of 1:42:217 (95.409 mph). Ronnie Bremer grabbed the third GT starting position for GT behind the wheel of the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R.
"We have a long way to go to win the race, but it's nice to have a small victory today," commented Said, who will also be driving in Saturday's NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Montreal. "This track requires so much commitment and trust that you're not going to take the wall down."
“It was a good day for Chevrolet in qualifying, with Jon Fogarty in the GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Chevy Riley getting the pole in DP, and Ricky Taylor in the SunTrust Chevy Dallara on the outside front row,” said Jim Lutz, Grand-Am program manager-GM Racing. “The Spirit of Daytona qualified fourth, so first, second and fourth in DP is very good.
“In GT Boris Said, driving the No. 31 Whelan Corvette is on the pole, and Ronnie Bremer qualified the No. 57 Camaro GT.R fielded by Stevenson Motorsports will start third in GT. Bill Lester in the Autohaus Motorsports GT.R Camaro was seventh and Gunter Schlaldach was eighth in the Banner Racing Camaro GT.R.”
Fogarty’s pole marks the 10th time Team Chevy has captured the number one starting position in DP competition this season. SunTrust Racing has won the pole six times with GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing and Spirit of Daytona Racing both taking the top spot twice.
“Overall, I am quite happy with our qualifying. It should be an exciting race tomorrow. It is a shorter race, only a two-hour duration, so it will be a sprint race from the drop of the green flag to the checkered, all on this challenging Formula One course.”
