DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 3, 2000) -- Paul Gentilozzi and Irv Hoerr, former teammates in the SCCA Trans-Am Championship, will compete in the July 9 Sargento/Road America 500 at Elkhart Lake, Wis.
Gentilozzi will be making his Grand American Road Racing Association debut, while Hoerr -- the Grand-Am winner at Phoenix -- will join a new team for the event.
Gentilozzi, currently bidding to win his third consecutive Trans-Am title using three different vehicles, will field his Johnson Controls/Home Link Jaguar XKR. Gentilozzi, who won the 1998 Trans-Am title in a Corvette and the '99 crown in a Ford Mustang, won the two most recent Trans-Am rounds and now trails series leader Brian Simo by 12 points.
"I want to find out more about the Grand-Am, and see what the competition is like," said Gentilozzi. "We're going to run the BFGoodrich tire, because that's what we're familiar with. That may hurt us some, because as a spec tire it is designed for durability rather than speed."
Hoerr joined Jack Baldwin to win at Phoenix and finish second at Miami in the Informix Riley & Scott Judd. For Elkhart Lake, the six-time IMSA champion will co-drive the Rock Valley Oil and Chemical Co. Camaro with Roger Schramm and Werner Frank.
Grand-Am points leader James Weaver and Andy Wallace will be reunited for the Sargento/Road America 500 in the Norcold/Thetford Riley & Scott Ford fielded by Dyson Racing. Their main competition will be the Doran Lista Special of Didier Theys, Mauro Baldi and Fredy Lienhard; the Risi Competizione Ferrari 333SP of Mimmo Schiattarella and Eric van de Poele; Jack Baldwin, Hurley Haywood and George Robinson in the Informix Riley & Scott Judd; the Philip Creighton Ford Lola of Scott Schubot and Butch Leitzinger; the second Dyson Ford of Elliott Forbes-Robinson, John Paul Jr. and Rob Dyson; IRL rookie of the year leader Jaret Schroeder and Tom Volk in the TRV Riley & Scott Chevy; and the new Banana Joe's Judd Lola of Jon Field and Rick Sutherland.
Practice for the Sargento/Road America 500 begins on Friday morning, with qualifying set for Saturday. The 500-mile event on the historic 4.048-mile circuit takes the green flag at noon on Sunday.
