GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Corvette leads way at Watkins Glen

The GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Corvette of Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney led the way in the first day of official practice for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen, a Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series event. Gurney topped the speed charts with a speed of 119.38 miles per hour around the twisting 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International road course.

“We had a really balanced car and improved it throughout the day,” Gurney said. “Obviously we are pretty happy but it is awfully close. I think we have three guys within 1/10th of a second so there is no breathing room there. We are not sure what exactly everyone did with tires but we are pretty happy with the balance, so it is a good start to the weekend.”

The SunTrust Corvette of Max Angelelli and Ricky Taylor were second quickest at 119.33 mph with Angelelli the faster of the two drivers.

Third quickest was the Spirit of Daytona Corvette of Antonio Garcia, Richard Westbrook and Oliver Gavin with Gavin the quickest at 119.28 mph.

In GT action, Dane Cameron topped the field with a speed of 109.61 mph in the Team Sahlen Mazda RX-8. His co-drivers are Wayne and Will Nonnamaker.

Second was the Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R of Robin Liddell and John Edwards. Liddell was the fastest at 109.54 mph.

Three practice sessions took place on a hot summer day at the picturesque road course that overlooks Seneca Lake. In all, 11 Daytona Prototypes and 21 GT cars took to the track during the day.

Practice and qualifying for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen will take place on Saturday with the eighth race of the Rolex Series season starting at 11:15 A.M. on Sunday. SPEED will provide live coverage of the event.
