The Racer's Group -- Qualifying for Grand-Am Lexus 400
Fontana, CA -- October 30, 2004 -- In racing news on a very important day in the history of The Racer's Group, team owner and driver of the #67 Monster Cable/TRG Porsche Kevin Buckler qualified 4th in class and fastest of all Porsches for tomorrow's Grand American Lexus 400. On a gorgeous southern California day, Buckler quickly changed into his driving suit after announcing TRG's 2005 plan to campaign two Daytona Prototype cars alongside two GT-class Porsches and promptly peeled off a blistering lap of 1:38.577, good for an average speed of 102.985 mph. Buckler will be joined by Pat Flanagan, of Laguna Hills, Calif. for Sunday's race.
"It's been a big day today," said Buckler, "but I'm glad that the team was able to focus and build a really good car for this race track for us. The car felt solid around the whole track, and its great to be in the fastest Porsche out there. My co-driver Pat has done a wonderful job in practice all weekend, and he hasn't put so much as a wheel wrong. We're very much looking forward to the race tomorrow, but first we're having a bit of a celebration for the announcement of our plans for next year."
RJ Valentine, of Hingham, Mass., qualified the #66 F1 Air/Gleason Agency Porsche in 9th position, with a time of 1:42.256, at an average speed of 99.280mph. Valentine and co-drivers Chris Gleason and Ian James are in contention for 3rd place in the GT driver's championship, and will look for a strong result to finish the season tomorrow.
Valentine said, "The car feels very balanced on the track, and it's only gotten better over the course of the weekend. Chris and I are going to give it all we've got tomorrow, and we're going to count on Ian to get us home and into 3rd place in the championship. This season has been a blast, and I'm going to be sad to see it end. We'll try to close the season in style tomorrow, though!"
The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series Lexus 400 will be broadcast live on Speed Sunday, October 31, at 4pm ET.
