Johnstown's Gleason Finishes Sixth At California Speedway Sunday

FONTANA, Calif., April 3 - Chris Gleason of Johnstown, Pa. and his teammate, Ian James of Kissimmee, Fla., finished a solid sixth in the Ferrari Maserati 400 Sunday afternoon at California Speedway here.

They drove the No. 22 BMW M3 fielded by Prototype Technology Group, BMW North America's factory team in the Grand American Rolex series. One of their team cars, the No. 21 of Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand, won.

Gleason qualified fifth in the No. 22 on Saturday and was pleased with the way things went in Sunday's two-hour-and-45-minute race, which was broadcast live on SPEED.

He drove the first 21 laps of the 86-lap race on California Speedway's "roval" road course, pitting under one of six yellow-flag periods for tires, fuel and the driver change. James then brought the car home in the hard-fought race, which featured the closest margin of victory in series history.

Gleason's next race is April 29-May 1 in Laguna Seca, Calif., near Monterey.

Gleason's post-race quote follows:

"All in all it was a good weekend. We have the engines back from last year, so at least that gives us enough power to stay with the Porsches.

"We had a good qualifying run; I qualified fifth.

"We just lost a lap in the race somehow. That put us in the hole, but Ian did a great job to bring us home. Now we have a finish under our belts, and we're looking forward to Laguna Seca.

"It was the right decision to cancel the test day on Thursday due to the winds, but the wind wasn't a factor today.

"Ian and I have been practicing our driver changes, and we've gotten them down to about 25 seconds. Our goal is to beat the crew; we want to have our driver change done before they're done servicing the car.

"Today our pit stop was perfect, and the crew did a great job all weekend."
