Borcheller Qualifies Sixth at Fontana Saturday in Kodak EasyShare DORAN JE4 Pontiac #54

FONTANA, Calif., Oct. 30 - Continuing its remarkable comeback from a bad accident at another race 20 days earlier, the Bell Motorsports/Feeds the Need Racing team qualified sixth Saturday afternoon for Sunday's Lexus Grand American 400 at California Speedway.

Terry Borcheller of Gainesville, Ga., the reigning Daytona Prototype champion, was behind the wheel of the team's Kodak EasyShare DORAN JE4 Pontiac No. 54 during qualifying, recording his fastest lap in 1:32.531 for an average speed of 109.715 mph. He'll start on the outside of row three in tomorrow's race, which will be broadcast live on SPEED at 4 p.m. Eastern time.

Christian Fittipaldi, the Brazilian star from Key Biscayne, Fla., will be Borcheller's co-driver tomorrow in the two-hour-and-45-minute race, the series' season finale.

"I think we missed the set-up a little bit," Borcheller said after qualifying. "We were pitch-sensitive in the turns, which made it hard to control the rear. I got a few good drafts with the 01 car - Max Papis - and I looped it once in turn six. I recovered and then came in for some changes.

"We made a change to the gurney, a shock adjustment and a tire-pressure adjustment, and I went back out," he continued. "Going into turn four on what was going to be my flyer lap, there was a car right in the middle of the track going about half my speed, and that screwed up our lap. I don't know if it would have been good enough anyway though; maybe just a couple of tenths faster."

The team was fourth-fastest in the morning practice session with a lap in 1:32.121 (110.203 mph).

Papis won the pole with a 1:30.962 (111.607 mph).
