Kansas City, Kan. – Michael Marsal returned to GRAND-AM competition on Friday as the double-duty racer took his first official laps around the new Kansas Speedway circuit. The 2.37-mile “roval” utilizes both the infield road course and the oval portion of the track and the event marks GRAND-AM’s debut at the facility as the series stages Round 9 of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) championship and Round 10 of the Rolex Series championship.
Marsal will open the 2.5-hour CTSCC event from the fifth row on Saturday after qualifying the No. 71 Multimatic Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage 10th on the grid. He teams with co-driver Tonis Kasemets as the pair targets their first podium finish of the season. The day opened with two practice sessions which saw the Multimatic Motorsports squad work to find a good set up on the No. 71 machine as the group learned the new track. The No. 71 Aston Martin was sixth quick in the first practice and 12th in the second session.
“The car was pretty good and I was happy with qualifying,” said Marsal. “The guys have worked on the car and I felt really comfortable. We are still working on finding a good balance between low-speed power down and the oval section, but we’ve got another practice tomorrow to keep working on the car. Overall I am looking forward to the race. We had a very good run going last week, and hopefully we can finish here with a strong result.”
Following CTSCC qualifying, Marsal was right back in action as the Rolex Series night qualifying session was held under the Kansas Speedway lights. Returning to the seat of the No. 93 Turner Motorsport BMW fresh off of his first Rolex Series podium at Road America, Marsal put the BMW ninth on the grid with a time of 1:16.636-seconds. He will start the 2.75-hour race before handing the controls over to Turner teammate Billy Johnson.
Marsal will return to the track for a 30-minute CTSCC practice and a 30-minute Rolex Series practice ahead of tomorrow’s two race events. The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge event will take place at 4:00 PM (ET) with the Rolex Series event to begin not long after the CTSCC checkered flag at 8:00 PM (ET).
