Rolex 24 -- Hour 7; Brumos Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Takes Over GT Lead; Porsches Also Second and Third in GT as the Long Night Begins
Daytona Beach, FL -- January 29 -- Andrew Davis, Leh Keen, and Marc Lieb and now Hurley Haywood have driven the new Brumos Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car, but it was Lieb who put the car into the GT class lead in the fifth hour of the 49th running of the Rolex 24. The team temporarily lost the lead during hour six when the car came in for a driver change, but Haywood re-took the top spot as the race reached the seven-hour mark.
The Paul Miller Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is in second place, currently being driven by Paul's son Bryce, who lead at the six-hour mark, but ended up in second place in the round of pit stops caused by the seventh caution of the event. The car, also being driven by Tim Sugden, former Porsche Cup winner, Rob Bell, and Bryan Sellers, is one lap ahead of the third-place GT car, the TRG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup currently being driven by Wolf Henzler. Brendan Gaughan, Andy Lally, Steve Bertheau, and Spencer Pumpelly share the driving duties in the car.
The Flying Lizard Porsche Riley Daytona Prototype, which sat on the pole and led the first 52 minutes of the race, lost 18 laps to the field after an off-road excursion. The team, which has turned the fastest lap of the event (Joerg Bergmeister) and the fastest lap at night (Patrick Long) was most recently plagued by a flat tire at the seven-hour mark. Seth Neiman is now in the car, which is 13th place 18 laps behind the leader.
