Gurney scores quickest lap as GAINSCO/Blackhawk squad gears up for Rolex 24
Alex Gurney, driving the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Pontiac Riley, was the class of the 28-car Daytona Prototype field today at the Daytona International Speedway for the opening day of Test Days at Daytona, the Rolex Sports Car Series' version of "spring training." His quick time, a 1:45.265 blast around the 3.65 mile speedway road course, was set early in the day while chasing baseline setups, and never bettered. Teammates Bob Stallings and Rocky Moran, Jr. also turned laps - the first-ever in a sports car for Moran. The fourth member of GAINSCO/Blackhawk's Rolex 24 at Daytona team, Champ Car champion Jimmy Vasser, will get behind the wheel on Friday.
Bob Stallings, co-driver/owner: "The competition is formidable and there's a lot of class drivers out there with a lot of talent. We're very, very happy with Rocky's first time in the car, he showed that he's going to get comfortable with the GAINSCO Riley very quickly."
Alex Gurney, co-driver: "We cannot wait for the Rolex 24. The driver lineup that we've put together is unbelievable and it's great that we're starting the year off right like this. We know that in a race like the Rolex 24, speed doesn't matter that much, but that doesn't mean we're not allowed to feel good about going so quick so early."
Rocky Moran Jr., co-driver: "The GAINSCO Riley really impressed me. I didn't expect the car to be as quick and balanced as it is - it's a very smooth drive and that's a testament to the great work done by Alex and our engineer, Kyle Brannan. To roll off the truck and be first quick shows what this team is capable of. I'm the most happy I've been in a long time to be with a racing team. This is the best deal ever and I hope it turns into more."
